BEST PIECE OF CAKE
Source: Willamette Week, July 23, 2003.
Frankly, the term "fantasy cake" brings to mind the image of sequined ladies and thong-wearing hunks exploding out of an oversized dessert -- a cake more titilating than tasty.
But Marilyn DeVault's "fantasy cake," a sweet triple threat with each tier consisting of cheesecake, choice of filling and cake ($58), is equally appealing to the id within, and customers clamor for seconds.
Devault first opened Piece of Cake (8306 SE 17th St., 234-9445) in Lake Oswego, back in 1979, after successfully pleasing the sweet tooth of a notoriously picky brother. Now located in Southeast Portland, she wows the most demanding brides with her lemon coconut and double-chocolate fudge confections. After all, Devault's pieces of cake not only taste like a fantasy but, covered in silky-smooth icing with your choice of floral decorations, look like a dream.
